Hey Teachers! We are happy to introduce you to a new take-home initiative, the Portable Parent Program! Easy to transport and assemble, the PPP is designed for students who are lacking what they need most: loving and involved parents. Students can use the PPP to cheer themselves on at soccer games, to read to before they go to bed, and with the PPP's soft and cozy design, even to snuggle with! Artist Statement
Based on the style of Harry Harlow's models in his attachment studies of the 1960's, the Portable Parent Project is a critical design that uses humor to illustrate both the inefficiency of many school instituted take home social programs, as well as the lack of parent involvement in many students' lives.
Weekend take-home social programs are becoming increasingly prevalent in schools. Teachers now face the additional responsibility of providing students with basic necessities that they may be in need of outside of school. Programs such as the Home Library and Backpack Program offer children books to read, and food to eat. Many of these programs are inefficient, however, because they fail to take into account the need for familial involvement to ensure the program's success.
The PPP offers a solution to this problem and the growing trend of lack of parental involvement: it provides a soft and warm "parental substitute" for those students whose parents are either unable or unwilling to become involved in their lives.
This project was part of a Critical Design assignment for a graduate education class at New York University.
